Sometimes, I think I hold too many secrets. So this is the curse of the trustworthy and the secretive.

...I'm fading.

>Proof that edit nights make us nuts.

We Like To
By Camille Javier and Alia Vargas

We like to drink every night
And smoke Winston Lights,
But we're stuck here on our edit night.

We'd like to watch a movie,
Or maybe go to a party,
But we're stuck here on our edit night.

We like to go bar hopping
Or maybe even shopping
But we're stuck here on our edit night.

We like to go to the parlor
We like to sing in the shower
But we're stuck here on our edit night.

Oh, GaaaamePlaaaan,
We loooove yooou too much.
You're killing us.

Haha! Bow.

>Hopefully more Pinoy than you think.

The winners of the MTV VJ Hunt were finally announced last week. The new MTV VJs Johan and Patty are now the reps for the Filipino MTV generation. So how pinoy are they exactly?

Now Johan Ekedum's definitely not a pure pinoy. Apparently he's part Nigerian, but he comes off witty with a pinoy sense of humor and is pretty knowledgeable of music. Then there's Patty Laurel, the horrible UAAP sportscaster turned VJ. Objectively speaking, she cannot report about basketball to save her life; but VJ-ing for a music channel is different, so I hope she does better in this field. She can speak Tagalog, but so can Reema, whom I felt was the most pinoy female in the VJ Hunt bunch. Perhaps she was too pinoy, though. Jologs rather. So they still opted for the more sophisticated and oh-so-girl looks of Patty. It still bothers me that she's so white, though. I hope she gets a tan or something.

In all honesty, I haven't seen these two VJs on TV yet. I hear they're ok, and people have been raving about how Johan is the perfect representative, having come from the land of the free (In other words, UP. :); and then there's Patty who's kind of white and kikay-looking but pretty ok according to some. They seem to be light-hearted happy people, so they look like they're going to do ok..

But what is it really to be Pinoy?

All I know is that I hope VJ Johan and VJ Patty (Wow, they've earned the right to be called such) come off down to earth, less Westernized than KC, good in Tagalog and English without the funky (or fake) twang, and up to date with the music scene in the Philippines and the rest of Asia. You can't be a VJ of MTV Philippines if you've no love for the local scene, right?

It really doesn't matter whether a Philippine representative is white or brown, yellow or red, half this or half that, or pure in all aspects. What matters is that they represent the country well in whatever field they're in. It'd be nice if they looked pure pinoy, but admit it, majority of Filipinos are mixed breeds, including me. (Nye, parang aso!)

There are only a few who look pretty pure. Take Efren "Bata" Reyes for example. Yup, he's pure, and people joke about his driver/ sugalero looks, his curved back and his habit of picking his nose in international tournaments. But hey, he's "The Magician" and he's got respect in the world of billiards. People can joke all they want about how he's the perfect example of the disgusting pinoy, but he's wonderful in pool, he kicks ass and shakes hands with his booger fingers. He rocks!

Then there's Akiko Thomson whose huge pinoy heart carries not a single drop of Pinoy blood. She's a Japanaese-American, but in order to compete for the country she loved most, she had to become a naturalized Filipino citizen. When asked what her most precious possession was, she showed us her certificate of naturalization because it took that one piece of paper to legally send her to compete in future competitions such as the SEA Games and the Olympics. Until now she still inspires little athletes to compete for the country. And when I think about it, she's more pinoy than most pure bloods. (I'm making htis sound like Harry Potter. Muggles!)

I think that people with big hearts for the Philippines are worthy of representing the country, no matter what color or foreign bloodlines they have. Once a pinoy, always a pinoy. And as long as you're proud of living here and being called a Filipino, than you'll do fine.

***
I dislike people who live here and complain about the country all the time. 'Pag minamaliit tayo, nyeta, umalis na lang kasi sila eh. If their country in whatever foreign land they're from is so cool, then why didn't they just stay there?!

***
By the way, Ramon has some interesting thoughts on how VJs seem to be so expendable (May 28 post).

You'd think that, the way music video channels rely on VJs,
they'd at least give them some kind of public send-off. But no,
they just quietly and suddenly disappear, and they leave no
trace of themselves behind, and no one ever mentions them
again: it's as if they never existed...

Read on.

>So close to being disappointing.

Working at home was useless yesterday. Our electricity was out for half the day, and all my batts only got me to shot listing one tape. One tape! Ay caramba.

So I took a trike and a jeep to Town Center to see So Close and to my horror, it was dubbed in English. Egad! I don't like dubbed movies anymore. Ever since I started working for GamePlan, videos that aren't in synch with the audio piss me off, or distract me a great deal. In So Close, I couldn't stand watching their mouths speak Chinese to English audio. So I did my best to just watch the characters' eyes instead.

The story was kind of cheesy, and the cuing (Is that correct? "Cuing"?) of the music was so "Dear Ate Helen". But the action was pretty cool! Really, it was! Hehe. Girl fight! Yeah! I liked the sword fight with the villain, and at least the women weren't so invincible throughout the movie. They were human and they got hurt, shot, and slashed through their lovely clothes. Kind of like Jackie Chan who makes ouch faces, and not like Steven Seagal whose hair hardly gets messy in a fight (I saw his bangs fall loose his gelled ponytail once. Just once!).

I still hope to see this again in Chinese with English subtitles instead. I remember watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon with my sisters in Festival Mall and I hated it. I still cried, and the English dubbing didn't sound that fake, but it was still dubbed. Ugh. It was only when I saw the subtitled one in Marc Abaya's house that I fell in love with it.

>The Magic 7!

I finally ordered for my 7th editing master. Wow, I've 7 masters already!

Every producer has editing masters, big 60s Sony Betacam tapes, where all the raw edits during all-nighters go. Producer in the weekly line up edit one segment each, and it's during assembly when all these segments from the different masters are edited into one final airing master.

i do have one. and that's really how i got it. haha! All our masters have different names. Although I think Boss Joy has so many that she stopped naming them already (She's been working here for 5 or 6 years, starting with CLP). They're just Joy's Master 9, Joy's Master 10, etc. Her masters have simpler designs nowadays, while other producers have pretty vibrant ones, sometimes colored with pens or decorated with pictures and stickers.

My 7th Master is dedicated to my chat with Meg this morning. Haha! Also because she got me into YM (Yeah, in na ako!). So there you go, Meg! Meet I've A Lubak On My Skull. Hahaha! Yey!

It'll be baptized by my Camp Coleman segment next week, and 2 segments from the Del Motne 202 race. So you guys please watch out for our eps this June. :)

*I must confess that my drawing of myself was kind of based on the cartoon drawing of Ate Cyn on one of her link buttons. I flipped it upside down and started from there. I haven't been practicing my drawing skills, so I'm still better at copying and modifying than creating from scratch. I'm one of those who can't draw images in my mind on paper. Will start practicing again soon. I hope. :)

You'll Fall in love with a Libra!

You value a drama free relationship,

Your Libra wants nothing more than to be

While indecisive Libra may take a while to fall for you,
once he / she does ... it's forever.

To catch a Libra, simply be over the top romantic.
Flowers, chocolates, wine, and bubble baths

And you'll get pampered back in time.

Libra may seem a bit cold and unresponsive at first.
After a while Libra's become less and less guarded...
And in the end, the most playful lover you'll ever know!

Aw, that's nice. Hehe. This is actually from an online quiz called What Sign Should Your Lover Be?, which I didn't feel like taking because a lot of the images were, um, porn-y. Haha! But hey, if you wanna take the quiz, then go ahead.

I was going to write something about how 2 years later, life after college has been so darn tiring. It's nothing like I imagined, but exciting, draining, and fulfilling nonetheless. My future in this business, and in life in general, still scares me sometimes, though.

But I'm tired. So you can just read Nono's "Fighting the Future" entry on this topic for now. It's a pretty good read.

Four years ago, we were in junior year college. I was busy then with
a dot-com parallel to university life. Back then, I didn't imagine LL
working for a publications company, moreso the country's biggest.
I didn't think of Katz as a teacher, moreso in the Ateneo. I never saw
Joepi as this bad-ass store manager whose mercy her employees
always beg for. I never saw Elpee and Alia putting in more than
twelve-hour days just to survive in the media industry. Eric never
struck me as a high school teacher, moreso a daddy. Che was my
climbing friend, we would spend hours in Redpoint going through
different walls and different routes. Now he's working for an NGO.
Jam was there in the bench with me each morning at six. Now he's
about to graduate from his masteral course, something which I've
been dreaming of for myself. I never saw Quark directing a local
softporn flick, moreso with Maui Taylor. There are a hundred more
names I can mention, but I guess the point being back then,
we never saw life coming fast at us...

Amen.

*This post was typed up a few minutes before 2 transformers blew up on our street and caused a black out. And now, Ozzy’s room is flooded. Poor guy. Pray his bed and books dry up soon.

>Here comes the rain.

The crew and I arrived from Cebu yesterday morning. Manila was wet and the rain was still light, but we entered a dark office with no power and the street to Paprika was starting to flood. GamePlan still ate lunch there, but after that, we all decided to take our work home. Aside from my Cebu stuff, I had the DV Walkman and 13 Del Monte tapes for shot listing; so Mama was nice enough to send Mang Gaudio to pick me up. Commuting in the rain would’ve been a disaster.

Since I had to wait for my family to get off work, I went to Greenbelt to see Matrix Reloaded again, except this time in a THX theater. I liked it better the second time. I think the THX system made a huge difference, so I enjoyed the action more. I still disliked the fight scene of Neo and the Smith clones. Horrible music and distracting CG. The talkies were still boring, so during the ala-Star Wars council meeting, I ran out to grab a burrito (I miss the Mega Mall burritos. The one I bought was the real kind with no rice.) and a coke. I went back in the theater for the mansion fight and by the time I was full and recharged with cola sugars, it was time for my favorite Trinity scene on the freeway. Woohoo!

I was supposed to meet a friend for the movie and coffee, but the rain kept him in QC. So I walked to Powerbooks on Pasay Road to wait for my family to pick me up and I think that the little bit of rain that I walked in got me feeling sick today. But it was really nice to walk on a rainy day. I like the steady sound of rain, and the memories I have with rain, and I like how some parts of Greenbelt are open to rain. Makes it look like a little village.

Rain also forces people to walk close together under their umbrellas. I kind of miss that, but it was ok because I didn’t have an umbrella to share with anyone anyway. But I did see a couple running together without an umbrella and I always found the thought of trying to shelter your partner with your hand or jacket really sweet. They both know that they’re still going to get wet anyway, but it doesn’t hurt to try. And the running always ends with laughter and relief in a shaded spot. Laughter and relief in the shade is always good.

It has been raining non-stop since yesterday, which means that I’ve been thinking of a lot of things since I arrived yesterday. After many weeks of work, I finally slept like a baby last night, and I woke up to the steady sound of pouring rain. It felt wonderful to wake up to rain rather than my alarm clock. And just as expected, the rain put me back to sleep.

I’ve been working all summer long and I haven’t had much time for friends and family. Some of the producers have been working even harder than me, but I really reached my burn-out limit last night and the start of the rainy season felt like the rain telling me to just stop and to give my body AND mind a break.

The rainy season always used to bring good things to me. One of my favorite memories was in the rain. I wonder if anything interesting is waiting for me this year.

***
All this still doesn’t keep me from feeling guilty that although I love the rain, some people are suffering from floods and sicknesses from dirty water. And God, I hope it doesn’t flood here again. And can mean people please stop cutting down too many trees? Ormoc had to die and come back to life to prove that excessive logging kills.

***
By the way, if you’re a Rurouni Kenshin fan, then you’d know that the title of this post is from the CBB of the Shishio Arc, which has been airing back to back on AXN this month. Way cool!

***
I decided to delete that last Matrix post. My writing was just sooo BAD. But I’m glad some people enjoyed my drunk writing, which I kept a bit of actually. Basta, I hated Matrix Reloaded the first time I saw it. Too slow and dragging with distracting CG. Yun yun. :)

I still kept Trinity’s cool picture, though.

yes, i wanna be a stuntwoman

Dang, that last post was just badly written. Bad, bad. Halata bang tipsy na? Sigh. And I'm too lazy to edit it. Oh well.

>When was the last time you did something for the first time?

This week's edit was Gretch and Joy's Tubbataha first Installment segment and man, I was drooling in the editing room. Haha! Buko's footage of Tubbataha was so beautiful, I couldn't help but roll it for a while and imagine I was in the water. The fish, the corals, the sound of the bubbles, it felt like I was hypnotized and dancing to rave music (Yuck, how 90s. Haha!). But no, this was me being mesmerized by nature.

I loved editing the beautiful footage, even if I was so tired and woke up on the wrong side of my sleeping bag the morning after. But really, it's segments like this that make me want to go out and breathe the fresh air, travel and just go wow. Reminds me of that airline ad, "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" I love that feeling, seeing something or going somewhere for the first time and just breathing "wow".

I know that I'll be able to dive in Tubbataha one day. I just have to. And you know, I'm dying to blog about my first trip to Location X, post pictures and shit, but that'll have to wait 'til the Del Monte episodes air in June. Hmmm, I should blog about Siquijor, Camiguin, Batad Rice Terraces, and Mt. Dagulgol. All these places are right here in the Philippines, in our own backyard, and still they can make you go wow because they're so beautiful. Everyone's so busy going abroad. That's good, but I think that one should explore his or her own country for a change. Even if it'll be your first time to actually go around the country, don't worry. The beauty of the Philippines will certainly take your breath away.

Wow Philippines! Nyahahaha!

I think I like travelling around the Philippines more. Not that the sights abroad aren't that great. Of course they are! But when you see something beautiful here, you feel pride. Yeah, I love my country. Tsk.

***
Here I am writing about travelling when I'm actually a little tired of it. Haha! I've a 5am flight for Cebu today. I've already been to Cebu, but I hope to see some new things this weekend. And drink some beer during the awarding ceremony. Yey!

Friday, May 23, 2003

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who's been so wonderful with cheering me up this week. I kind of went Sisa mode this morning, having awakened to a noisy editing bay and just wanting to go home and watch TV. Well, I'm finally home now, although drinking while watching Beauty and the Beast on the Disney Channel seems so wrong. Haha!

I've to shoot a 24-hour race in Cebu this weekend. God, it's as if the work just never stops, but I'm hoping to be able to find time to rest after that, and that the food in Cebu is good. Mmm, lechon.

The race is called Urban Carrera, in preparation for the Carerra Habagat in Siargao this june. For those who don't know, Carrera Habagat is one of the most difficult races in the world, like the Eco Challenge, in the sense that it's 4 days straight non-stop, and the teams' strategies include when to sleep, when to eat, trying to fight fatigue and just making it to the finish line, hopefully in good condition to walk, smile for the cameras, and dance and party after the awardng ceremony. Last year's race in Camiguin was really fun, so the fact that it's going to be in Siargao is really exciting. the catch is that 22 teams registered this year. Wow, compared to last year's 15, this race is starting to look like one bloody shoot.

I wonder if I'm going to be sent to shoot again, because I'll have to start training seriously if that's the case. Chasing adventure racers is really no joke. Believe me.

We finally soft launched last night. The resto is located

Invite your friends. Invite your family. Invite your baranggay,

Go, eat and make their family happy. :)

>We're all on the same boat.

Bored out of my mind -- well, more of procrastinating to death -- I passed by Joey's BYC site and chanced upon what he called "a brilliant film discussion".

This was the closing of Robert Quebral's reaction to a review on his latest Sex Drive.

The funny thing is I spent years trying to reach this spot and poured
a lot of hard work to get my film made, went through some very hard
decisions, battled all sorts of "evil" in the industry, and here are a
couple of arrogant dudes who sneaked out of their corporate shells
to spend TWO HOURS inside the theater. And they, without wasting
more of their precious time, dismiss your film like it were some
chicken peas strewn on the ground. What an encouraging thing to do.
And they would cry out to the heavens "Is this what we Filipinos
deserve?" If they think my work is cr*p, well some people enjoyed
looking at the cr*p while I pooped and they, the supreme beings, just
had to poke into the s**t with a stick. One said "He ate peanuts last night",
while the other one declared, "How come I don't see any almonds?"

I admit that this film isn't one of my favorites, and with a Katya-Maui combo, soft porn was bound to happen. But I watched it because I wanted to see what he'd do with the project. I also think that Robert could've done better, but I honestly enjoyed the movie's wise cracks, incredibly insane scenarios and weird outcome. Yes, even that giant penis gave me a laugh.

Most of all, Robert stood up for his work, even if it wasn't exactly his best. He put a lot into the project. After the screening during the UP Premire, hardly anyone minded the bold stars. Everyone went over to Robert to congratulate him, to pat him on the back and have a picture with him. The people who did so understood what it was like to be in the business Robert finally entered, after years of good shorts, music vids and ads.

After watching the way Quark worked on Gamitan last year, I knew that I didn't have it in me to make films. I only visited the set twice, but the whole atmosphere was just so stressful.

My passion right now is in sports media, where I actually experience perhaps the same amount of difficulties as my friends in film do. Only our fields or departments are different, but the same amount of passion is there, which is why I am thankful to be friends with such passionate people. I respect them because I know that we're all trying to reach our dreams in what seems like hell. We're all working around limits that strangle creativity and praise money and, sometimes, leave us unappreciated.

Someday, our generation's going to explode with something big and beautiful, with a bang so loud and hard, the know-it-all critics won't know what hit them. They'll probably get heart attacks and just die.

>Mean thoughts to make you feel better.

My old friend Hazel sent this to our barkada mailing list and even if I'm not feeling particularly sad today, it somewhat helped lift my spirits. Haha! Labo. Trying to be deep.

AS I MATURE

I've learned that you cannot make someone love you.
All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in.

I've learned that no matter how much I care,
some people are just assholes.

I've learned that it takes years to build up trust,
and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.

I've learned that you can get by on charm for about fifteen minutes.
After that, you'd better have a big weenie or huge boobs.

I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to others -
they are more screwed up than you think.

I've learned that you can keep puking
long after you think you're finished.

I've learned that we are responsible for what we do,
unless we are celebrities.

I've learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at
first, the passion fades, and there had better be a lot of money to
take its place.

I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken
from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away.

Pass this along to your friends...trust me, they'll appreciate it.
Who knows, maybe something good will happen. If not...

Tough.

Hazel hardly writes in. And when she does, they're mostly forwards. I don't really like forwards, but I always scan them anyway to see if they're worthwhile, and I'm glad that I checked this one out.

>I wasn't going for the FX.

I was so exicted to watch the Matrix this week until I found out that the movie was coming out on Thursday and not Wednesday. Our race starts on Thursday. Shucks. Hehe. Gosh dang it, as Akiko would say.

Quark was sweet enough to buy us tickets last week, and I feel so sad that I won't be able to use mine. Well, I don't really feel bad about not seeing the movie. I think I was more excited to see the Wednesday people. We don't even meet up on Wednesdays anymore, so every time we have plans to meet up, I get really excited, like a puppy jumping around in a garden for the first time.

I'm definitely watch the movie next week. I'll just imagine I'm watching with the Wednesday group. Huhu.

Have fun, guys! Hope to see you soon. :)

>Alia jokes are coming my way.

Ok. What's with the sudden popularity of my name? Let's anylize this.

Way back when, before I was born, there was Queen Alia, the queen of Jordan. One day, my Tito Jimmy looked up at an Alia Royal Jordanian Airlines poster and figured that since Papa wanted my name to start with an "A", he suggested "Alia". And so I was born. Alia Andrea Ma. da Silva Vargas. Yeba!

Only one other little girl in my school had the name Alia, but her name was Rosa Alia, so most of us called her Rosa. For many years I was the lone Alia in my neighborhood, my school, my turf, until one day, some 14-year old singer married R. Kelly. Yes, her name was Aaliyah, the late Aaliyah who died in a plane crash one or two years ago.

My name had a worse time in college. "What's your name?" "Alia," I'd say. "Oh, like the singer?" Hmph. Then people would give themselves a hard time by spelling my 4-letter name with 7. I remember a CADS dancer named Chef who actually spelled the beginning of my name with 3 A's. "Chef naman. You're killing me!" But hey, I loved Aaliyah's music and we CADS dancers enjoyed dancing to her songs. We all felt bad when she died. Everyone was talking abotu it, texting each other how bad they felt and thinking of what songs to dance to in her tribute. For some reason, though, a ballerina thought that I was the one who died. I was in Bangkok when she called my house and a few weeks later, Aaliyah's plane crashed. Hence, the ballerina thought that I died in a plane crash from Bangkok. Poor girl. I also found out that some another friends, some who I'm still pretty close to, thought that I had died. Aw, no, no, don't worry. I'm still here! See?!

The Aaliyah and Alia joke kind of died after that. Even my friend who for years kept my name in his phone as Aaliyah changed it to Alia Vargas. Wow, thanks! Finally. But now...

What's with these Alia's in the MTV VJ Hunt?

Man, you should've seen my face when I saw the finalists in the paper some weeks ago. I saw one Aliya and said, "Whuh!" And then another Alia and said another whuh! Dang! And one had the same spelling as mine. Alia. Hmmm.

So I can see it now. If one of them gets in MTV, I'm going to meet new people and get this "Ah, like the VJ?" joke and I'm gonna see it coming at me a mile away.

Oh well. That's alright. What are their names again? Alia Nahas? Aliya Parks? Dude, I'm Alia Vargas. I've fallen off the roof of a moving trike. I rule.

*Haha! Ego trip ba.

***
I'm torn between voting for Reema Chanco and Aliya Parks. I like Reema because she can be really jologs and walang pake. Plus she's family. Hehe. But I don't like her picture in the website. She looks so much better and more approachable than that. I also like Aliya because she seems to be a talented person. But really, I know nothing about her, except that she sings for a band, I think, and that she tried diving.

Toni, whom I met in school, is a really good singer. I don't know how she'd do as a VJ, though, but I honestly feel that she should focus on her singing career instead. She has a good voice and I think that she should use her singing talent to do persue better things than being a VJ. Not that being a VJ is bad, of course, but I see her doing better in theater.

Then there's Patty Laurel whose name rings an unfamiliar bell (Hmmm. "Unfamilar bell" sounds weird, but what the hell.). They say she's from Zobel, 3 batches below me. I'm sure I've met her, maybe once or twice, but I have no recollection that she looked like that. Anyhoo, I like her reason for why she should be the next MTV VJ: Because I'm 100% Filipino and I'm a college girl, so I speak for the generation. For that answer alone, I guess I'd like to vote for her, too.

Dang. This is actually stressing me out. I won't vote na lang. Haha!

>Coz I wanna be in... :)

My first Friday Five!

1. Would you consider yourself an organized person? Why or why not?
Most of the time I am. But when I'm messy, my mess still looks organized, in the sense that it's all contained in one area. And I know what's in there. But I dont like it when things are disorganized for a long time because it messes up my mind as well. I can't work when a room's messy, or when my notes and tapes aren't neatly written or labeled, or when my transcripts are filled with corrections which should've been typed in before they were printed out. I especially hate it when people touch my stuff and fix it up without telling me. That's still my stuff!

Yikes. Lumalabas na nga yung obsessive compulsive disorder ko!

2. Do you keep some type of planner, organizer, calendar, etc. with you, and do you use it regularly?
My filo fax, which I named Darth Filo. My filo's my life. If I lose that, I'm dead. But now I also have a 3c palm, but I only use the address book. Coloring my sked in my filo calendar is more interesting, and I use different colors to make my life look colorful. :)

3. Would you say that your desk is organized right now?
Hell no. Well, sometimes...because I stuff all my junk in the drawers.

4. Do you alphabetize CDs, books, and DVDs, or does it not matter?
Yup, yup! Sometimes by genre. Naks! Eventually it'll get messy, then I'll just fix it up again when I'm bored, stressed, or pissed. Cleaning up always makes me feel better.

5. What's the hardest thing you've ever had to organize?
My money. Until now it's a bitch to organize. I don't make much, so whenever I've lots of it, I can't help but buy something, just one thing that's really, really nice. A reward to myself kuno. Then I'm poor again. Haha!

>Attack on Oblivio.

Mike Barrish, or Oblivio as we bloggers know him, was attacked last night. I don't know him personally, but reading his entry made me so sad. It's a transcript of him recording himself, talking about what happened.

I’ve been pacing around my apartment recording this.
I am to say the least wound up. And my face hurts some.
Andrew arrived a short time ago; I sent him to the bodega
to get some ice and bread. I hardly have any food in the
apartment, so I figure I’ll make myself some eggs. I’m
okay now, though I’m shaken up, obviously. My mother
is going to be upset to read about this. She reads my
website. I said to Andrew that nothing has changed. I’ve
always known that there are people who would do this.
I’ve always known why. I’ve been lucky till now that it
hasn’t happened to me. I guess I’m lucky I’m not hurt
worse. I said to Andrew that we haven’t evolved very much.

I hope that this never happens to any of my friends, or to anyone for that matter.

>Bzzzzzzzz...

The GamePlan Guestbook's a-buzzing with pre-race posts from old racers and racer wannabes. Of course, Carlo had to post some tips, including this funny one:

-Guys, I know it'll be hard, but please try not to drool over Tricia too much.
And no flirting with the show's producers either. They're all hot, but will
pretty much be sungit due to sleep deprivation.

Emil also posted a link to a 202 article in Inq7. Read on to get an idea of how exciting (and utterly terrifying for us producers) this race is going to be.

Less than a week to go!

*We should've corrected the writer of the article, though. The name of Rovilson's team was 202 Delicious and not 20Tootylicious. Haha! Sounds like! But just the same, he should've clarified it with us. Oh well. That was a year ago.

>A new group of idols.

Congratulations to the tops of the Arena/TLP International Challenge!

And here's a nice bit from an article by Mrs. Leah Ledesma Stroem:

Rune never seizes to amaze me through these years we have been together
and I hope he will always keep his promise of never having a dull moment
in our married life. When you have an Ironman husband you also have a built
in role model for yur children. My husband happens to be more than just
a role model for sports but rather as an entire accomplished person.

>Before the day ends...

Happy birthday, Mama!!! Miss Mad or Tita Mad to everyone else! Hehe.

You're the sexiest and most beautiful 52-year old on earth!

...Oh shit. I just gave away your age. :p

>Mutation is evolution.

jean grey rules!
Spoilers.

I'm so lucky to have a B.I. boss like Joy (I say B.I. because I had two scripts to write. Not one! Two!!!) because Monday night, she dragged Buko, Jan and I to watch X2 in Robinson's East and it was awesome! My favorite's still Mystique, but man, Jean Grey was so cool! In the ending, and yes, this is a spoiler, the VO talks about how mutation is a process of evolution. As the camera closes in on the water, you see this image swimming, or more like flying, in it. Stupid me, I asked Joy, "O! Wow! What's that?" And in her cute and excited voice, she said, "Gene became a phoenix!!!"

Now Joy and I open our arms int he office and say, "I wanna be a phoenix!"

Other than the coolness of a mutant's evolution, I liked how the plot was so messy in an action-packed way, with Striker as the new villain and the key to Logan's filtered past, Mystique's ingenious means of getting Magneto out and the two of them teaming up with the X-Men, and Professor Xavier trapped in an illusion, a sort of mind's hell care of his former student Jason. And, of course, I saw the betrayal of Magneto coming and actually loved it. I liked seeing how the mutants combine their powers for certain situations and when Magneto rearranged the plates in the fake Cerebro, I realized what a destructive pair Magneto and the professor can be, or were, since they were actually partners from long ago.

I also liked spotting other X-Men like Jubilee, Kitty Pride and Colossus (Si Colossus nga lang parang super senior kasi ang tanda na niya at puro bata yung mga kasama niya. He's a hunk!). I also liked the bar scene where Rebecca Romaine, who actually plays Mystique, played a pretty blonde without the blue rubber for a costume. Way cool. And her tent scene with Logan…Haha! Priceless.

I felt bad for Lady Deathstrike, though. I thought that Logan would save her. And why'd they leave Jason behind? Poor guy. I was also a little disappointed that Iceman didn't do much, but Rogue's powers seem to be getting stronger. I guess everything's being saved for the next movie. I didn't appreciate the Nightcrawler's slowmo in the oval room either, But he's still a really cool character. And wow, I was so excited to see Pyro with Magneto! Yeah! I felt young again, watching X-Men and Ghostbusters back to back on a Friday night!

Great movie! Sobrang bitin, but way better than the first X-Men movie. Storm and Jean Grey had better hair, and Cyclops cried. Huhu. I cried, too, coz I'm such a softee. It's love! It's love!

*Nyee, what a weird way to end a movie review. Hehe, but that's me! ;)

I remember watching the UP Diliman premiere of X-Men in Greenhills Theater back in 2000. I never used to like buying premiere tickets, but I bought for this one out of pure excitement to see it in the big screen with my new comm friends. Amy, Marelle and I met up in school and rushed to Greenhills (That was the first time they rode with me, and I was driving like a mad woman because I didn't want to be late. Poor girls. :) to grab seats with Vida, Chris, Maggie and their friends from UP. I loved the movie. I remember Chris dissing Storm's hair, Vida and the girls complaining about Storm's stupid "what happens to frogs when they're struck by lightning" line. But I wasn't that anal about movies yet. I just loved it to death.

Of course now, I really find Storm's line stupid, and her hair so stiff. She was my favorite in the cartoons, so thank God they finally fixed her hair with the proper layers. I can't wait for her to display more of her power, though.

We saw the Matrix Reloaded trailer before X2 started. Yes, it's a great trailer, but I didn't like the ending where al the agents getpunched into the sky in slowmo, and Neo flies through what, Europe? Ano 'yan, Harry Potter? Man, he looked like he was playing quidditch. Still, I'm excited to see the movie. Exciting times!

>Yup! I'm bored.

>Missing the filling.

We're watching Alias here in the office, and when Sydney's friend started singing on the stage, the girlfriend said, "That's my boyfriend."

Man, I kinda miss that, you know? The pride of watching everyone watching your man, or looking at his work, or just looking at him, period! And when you look at him and he looks at you, it's likes God, I've no idea why you love me but thank you, thank you, I love you and I'm proud of you. Woohoo!

Oh well. I've many friends to be proud of right now, so yahoo! My friends rule! And my family rules! And hey! Whoever I end up with in the future will be a really lucky guy! I mean, I'm a one-woman audience, with the laugh of a hyena and the scream of a thousand banshees! Yeba! Whee!

Ok, this post is such a turn off. Haha! No one's gonna wanna bring me anywhere public! *Snort!*

Psst! Mirror project #2! :)

>A weekend with the bigger family picture.

I grew up not knowing many of my relatives. We used to have huge, as in HUGE birthday parties and everyone from relatives to my parents' classmates would be there. We used to have themes, too. For my 3rd birthday, the theme was Strawberry Shortcake. My sisters, however, had bigger parties, one being a Star Wars party where Papa was dressed as a Storm Trooper and Tito Jimmy as Darth Vader (because he was the taller one). I saw some old tapes of our parties, but I noticed that every party's attendance got smaller and smaller.

But there are still a few families that we keep in touch with. The Bunags, for example, live in the next subdivision in our village. We used to be able to see their house from ours, but now that so many houses are up, we make do with having mini reunions, especially for special occasions such as birthdays.

Tita Peachy celebrated her birthday last Sunday and she wanted to have a joint party with Mama. Mama's birthday's tomorrow, so we all drove down to Esperanza Farm in Batangas and had an incredibly filling lunch. The salad alone was filling, plus there were some yummy homemade bread rolls. When the seafood pasta came up, I attacked it twice, only to find out that there was still some chicken, rice, and oh my goodness, dessert! I leaned over to Colo and said, "Dang. I should've worn a bigger shirt."

Colo Ventosa works for Nike Philippines, the sponsor of Carlo and Tricia's clothing. Although seeing her in shoots such as Nike 3on3 is fun, being with her in a family setting is really different. Odd even. Apparently, she's been the Bunags family friend ever since, except she used to live in San Francisco, which is why we never met before. During the lunch, she was like my new partner in crime, ganging up on Martin and Paolo's girlfriends Corina and AJ and scolding them for not watching Star Wars. Mean, mean. But really, we were all our fathers' little Star Wars fanatics and to have a girlfriend who couldn't understand the trilogy was a crime! Haha! Ok, not really. We just had fun teasing them. But I remember the first time we met AJ in the Joses house 2 years ago and Nina and I went up to Tito Lito and Tita Peachy and told them that AJ didn't know the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek, and Tita Peachy said, "Oh no! How will she survive in our family?"

AJ and Corina are really sweet, though, and very patient with their boyfriends who decided that we play basketball. Nyah! I admit that I can't play ball, but these poor girls were in sandals. Actually, they all looked like a teeny bopper band. The girls were in white pants and pastel blouses, while the boys wore matching Abercrombie shirts. Funny. It was like being in the Twilight Zone.

We decided to play HORSE and it was a little surreal since Colo was actually in a skirt and leather shoes. "O, Colo! Where're your Nikes?" As for me, I couldn't play basketball for crap, so I did my best by doing dancy moves to give Martin a hard time (because he was after me). The funniest was Jaime, though. He's been taking some basketball workshop in school and since most of his fancy shots weren't going on, Colo and I told the brothers, "Hey, we're really worried about Jaime, ha. Jaime! Who's you're coach again? Ano ba 'yan?"

I hadn't been home for more than a week and to join my family in Batangas was really fun. Families should go on gimmicks more often. It's food for the working soul. :)

eat this, marty!
The birthday girls Tita Peachy and Mama! :)

Actually, the clients came by to check our Frisbee edit and I’m sooo happy that they liked it. Phew! I was a little scared, though, because during the first viewing, one of them looked worried and her brow was furrowed. Oh no. But by the second viewing, she and another girl started smiling a bit and making happy comments about some of the shots and the people (who are actually their friends) we interviewed.

So thank God this day is over! After assembly, we’re going to watch X-Men. Yesss!!!

>My boss the bumble bee.

Just last Sunday, producer Karen shot The Tour of the Fireflies, a bike from Marikina to Quirino Grandstand and back. Crazy you think? Well, we here at GamePlan admire these cute characters. Notice that you’ll never find a single firefly in the city. The reason? The city is so polluted that all the fireflies have gone and can only be found in the provinces or in any outdoor wonder in the country.

The Tour of the Fireflies aims to promote clean air by using bikes as a mode of transportation. Every year, there’s an old man who’s 80 plus I think, and his wonder bite last year in our GamePlan story was, “If I can do it, you can, too!” He wasn’t able to bike this year, but he still attended the event to cheer for the participants.

Bikers (and non-bikers who just borrowed bikes for the heck of it) of all ages come together for this inspiring and hopeful event. And to make things more interesting, there’s a Best in Costume Contest for the characters who come dressed as fireflies, butterflies, bees and what have you. There was actually a guy dressed up as a shark last Sunday! I honestly found that weird, but still, it was cool. Sharks need a pollution-free world, too, you know.

Gretch and Tricia didn’t have time to make any costumes. Our boss Joy Ibay, however, came as a really, really, REALLY cute bumble bee. Cool, no? My boss was a bumble bee! She was the cutest bumble bee ever and I felt so sad that I wasn’t in the event to see her bike in her costume. The making of her costume was a quite a production. Her dad and brother helped her make her wings, and she had a cute bumble bee butt that was strapped on to her with a belt. Then she put antennas on her helmet and voila! Bumble bee!!! Poor girl, though. Some kids asked if she was a fly, but she didn’t care. And hey! She won 6th place for her costume. Yeba!

I’m so happy that the event was packed as usual. Even little kids who have probably never even seen fireflies in their lives got their little bikes and joined the brigade. The event takes place every year, so I suggest that we all save up for bikes and join the tour in 2004. I myself wasn’t able to bike because I was out of town for work. Hmph. But that’s ok. I saw real fireflies in Location X. Yey!

So remember! We should do our part in keeping our surroundings clean and pollution-free. Come on! Don’t you wanna see fireflies again? I do. :)

look at me!
Bumble Boss Joy!!!

"We are also in danger of disappearing like the fireflies, but we can choose to fight for clean air and bring the fireflies back."

***
By the way, their plug is one of the cutest plugs ever. It starts with a house, and one by one, bikers in firefly costumes bike by. A biker in the same costume comes out of the house and he joins the bike brigade and suddenly there're a lot of bikers biking by. Then the comes out: Tour of the Fireflies. Cute!

>Strong women still need to be prepared.

I'd like to invite everyone, especially women, to watch our Women's Self-Defense Special with Women's Way Self-Defense this Saturday night at 7. It's a very, very good episode produced by Camille Javier and you will learn how to defend yourself in dangerous situations, from an encounter with a snatcher to a carjacker and yes, even a rapist.

We rated this episode PG because some of the demonstrations, especially the rape, are very, um, frightening. Really, I got chills down my spine. So please watch it. It's for your own good. All I did was field produce and edit the spiels, but I'm proud to have played a small part in this project.

If you're interested in taking the classes, contact head instructor Lara de Ubago at 532-5727, or visit the gym at 3/F 615 Boni Avenue cor. Sikap St., Mandaluyong. You can also email her here and here.
